Iphone panoramas

I am still amazed at how powerful and versatile the iphone4 is. I have been using this app Pano to play around with panoramas. This technology has been around since the 90’s – QuickTime started out as a virtual reality panoramic photo tool (funny that it’s pretty much just a video player now, ey?) but what I find so incredible is how easy it gas become bit only to shoot these panoramas but to share them straight from the phone.

Case in point, I photographed the Christmas party the company of a former wedding client this week. The party was at the fancy Do&Co bar in the very city center of Vienna just opposite Stephansdom. The view from the balcony of the winter garden, overlooking Stephansplatz bathed in amazing light thanks to the cities night lights and amazing effect added by the snow took my breath away. I immediately felt the itch to document this photographically. I had my 5d mark II with a 16-35 mm lens on in my hand and immediately realized that even this extreme wide angle would not do this scene justice. My instinctive disappointment made way for excitement when I remembered that I can use the iPhone in my pocket to do what my 3000 € professional SLR can’t do. Isn’t that amazing? On top of that the iphone4 currently sells for 1€ when you sign a contract with a mobile provider. Who needs heavy pro gear anymore 🙂
